How to Reduce Shootings

In the opinion article published by The NEW York Times, Nicholas Kristof presents his opinion on how to reduce shootings. The article is labeled “opinion” to inform the reader that the content is the opinion of the writer regarding the topic of interest. The issue of interest in this article is the high rates of gun shootings in the United States. Kristof notes that gun shootings in the United are the worst in the world. Kristof suggests that a public health approach to gun shootings should be used. In addition, he suggests that the goal should be to ensure fewer gins are available to Americans. According to Kristof (2017), the approach would see guns out of the streets.

Kristof uses facts about the number of guns available to Americans and the facts about gun-related deaths in the United States compared to other countries. He notes that there are 300 million guns possessed by Americans, which translates to one gun per person. He then compared this to the guns owned by Japanese citizens. The number of guns held by Japanese citizens by far lower than the United States. Kristof also uses facts about gun-related deaths in the United States and other countries. The findings reveal that fewer guns translate to fewer deaths. Kristof presents a counterargument that mass shootings are not the main cause of deaths. In debunking the argument, Kristof presents statistics of mass shootings and the deaths caused by these events. In his call to action, Kristof calls for people to make the necessary efforts to implement the proposed solutions to the problem. I consider this ethical journalism because the article is based on facts.
